Part of this is how Aaronovitch counters expectations through naming conventions. Authors Nisi Shawl and Cynthia Ward discuss the “unmarked state,” or assumed characteristics of most point of view characters (very frequently in fiction white, straight, young, able-bodied, male), and make note that the idea of the unmarked state is itself problematic.Īaronovitch, through Peter’s worldview, does an excellent job of subverting the idea that any of the common traits that define a “normal” character can be assumed. The book has inspired courses for writers hoping to better their own fiction by understanding how to write nuanced and fully-fleshed characters from different backgrounds, particularly those of race, (sexual) orientation, age, ability, religion, and sex (termed ROAARS traits). This is in contrast to writers of the #OwnVoices movement, who are writing about underrepresented characters or communities informed by their own experiences and identity. I recently finished reading the excellent Writing the Other, a guide for writers hoping to create realistic characters who don’t share their worldview. Xamples of Spectral Appearances are so numerous, and the Editor has collected so many, both ancient and modern, that considerable difficulty has been occasioned in determining which shall here be set forth. But there are people with real disorders, such as OCD, or PTSD for example that can't 'just do it', because to them, it feels as though just doing it is going to cause a chain reaction of bad events.ģ) This book also is big on forgiveness, and the ideal that people do their best. This is a severe source of anxiety for me every day, and I will fight this toxic statement until the day I die.Ģ) This book is of the idea that 'you should just do it!', or, in other words, that changing is simply decision-making. I was hoping the book would be full of the incredible amount of love and positivity that Jeffrey exhibits online.ġ) This book perpetuates the incredibly toxic idea that to love someone else, you must first fall in love with yourself. My fiance is trans-nonbinary, and I'm transgender. I got this book because Jeffrey is nonbinary. I adore Jeffrey Marsh, I follow them on Twitter and their content is nothing short of inspiring and amazing. If you want a good introduction to morality that's not too difficult to read, this is a good book to read. Overall though, it was a very interesting book and I definitely learned some new things. I do also wish this was geared a bit more towards an international audience and wasn't so focused solely on America, as I think it wouldn't be a stretch to make it a bit more global (but of course I feel that way, since I'm not American). I can't help but wonder if this could've been a bit shorter and a bit more to the point. There are definitely parts of this that are a bit dry and on occasion, things feel a bit repetitive. I also think it took a long while to get there and even though I understand why the author spent so much time explaining different subjects before, that part got a bit boring, to be quite frank. I do wish there was a bit more about religion in it, though. I especially enjoyed the part about Democrats and Republicans, their similarities and differences, as well as the parts about religion, as that was the part of the book I was most excited about. I'm not a expert, but to me his theory seems viable and definitely interesting. I thought this was quite well constructed, starting with explanations on his philosophies and studies on morality, and then moving on to his theory on why humans act the way they do. I've always found religion, politics and how it both brings people together and divide them fascinating, so when I found this book I thought it would be perfect for me.Īnd it was pretty good. All in all both have given wonderful performances. Silver, whom despite not being the brightest bulb in the box was a lovely character. Dustin Hoffman does such a sublime job playing Mr. The BBC did a great job to put a marvellous story into this magnificent movie, for the young and the old alike. There is no doubt that Judi Drench and Dustin Hoffman are huge names and absolutely amazing (to say the least) actors, however there have been plenty of movies with superb actors and great names which turned out less so. There is no doubt that Roald Dahl is a true genius, nevertheless there have been cases where movies have not lived up to their original works. Indeed, recent scientific breakthroughs regarding the social and cognitive capacities of the horse and its ability to adapt to changing ecosystems indicate that this animal is a major evolutionary triumph.
